Video reviews in golf - yes or no?

The R&A and USGA have recently issued a new Decision on the Rules of Golf to limit the use of video evidence in the game, with immediate effect. This refers to evidence that could not be seen with the 'naked eye' as well as when players use their 'reasonable judgement' when applying the rules.

All of this comes after Lexi Thompson was penalised four strokes in a recent major after a TV viewer contacted the LPGA to inform them that Lexi hadn't correctly replaced her ball on the putting green the previous day. Thompson was two clear when handed the four-shot penalty on the 12th hole in her final round, eventually going on to lose in a playoff.

The use of video technology has been fully embraced in several sports, with the likes of tennis and cricket utilising everything that's on offer. But when it comes to people at home calling in and affecting the outcome of an event, is that a step too far?

Competition news

Ladies Flag Day and Pro' Stableford

Saturday was the ladies flag day and the Pro's stableford. The ladies flag is an interesting competition to the male members and every year they ask 'what is it?' Basically, the ladies play a round until all their shots have been used, they then stick a flag in the ground and the lady who travels the furthest round the course wins. This year Audrey Lee was the winner with a nett 70, closely followed by Pat Smith on 71 and the Lady Captain came third with a 76.

My stableford competition was won by the Liverpool fan of the year John Ramsey, who had 37 points, same as his teams tally at Christmas. Not sure what that means for the rest of John's season, but anyway. In second place was Adrian Barnes with 36 points, beating Alan Calderbank on countback also on 36 points. In fourth was John Richmond with 34 points. Well done to these four who all won shop vouchers. The nearest the pin on the 16th hole was won by Neil Wesson 15 feet 9 inches. There were 67 golfers that entered another good turnout, the two's club paid out £9.50 per two.

Onto Tuesday, and the Ladies had their Par/Stableford. The winning score in the Par which is like the men's bogey competition was -1 by Janet Moorhouse, in second was Sandra Carr with -3 and third place was Carole Kelly -4.

The Ladies Stableford was won by Olwen Robinson with 23 points.
