Hello golfers,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter. I hope most of you managed to get out onto the course last weekend, it almost felt Spring like at times! It was great to see so many up playing Saturday and Sunday for our two competitions, hopefully we are on the run into warmer temperatures and it definitely feels better now the nights are getting lighter.

Last week’s golf on the tours was exciting with Joost Luiten winning in Oman with -16 and Chris Wood in 2nd place on -14. On the PGA Tour in LA we had Bubba back to winning ways after 2 years winless. Not everyone’s cup of tea Bubba but he sure does make it fun to watch. This week it’s the Honda Classic on the PGA Tour, Can Rory get going this week or maybe Tiger on his 3rd straight week for the first time in years can rediscover his winning ways, certainly going to be fun to watch.

Competition news

Winter League 10

Winter League 10 was won by Stuart Davies who scored 38 points using his new Lynx irons to great effect. He just beat John Richmond by 1 point with Mark Harrison and Andrew Benson tied on 35 points. Mr Richmond’s 2nd place giving him 14 points towards the OOM increasing his lead over Richard Williams in the race to Pilley.

Good Companions

Good Companions is getting ever tighter at the top with 1 more round to go. Winners this month were Adrian Barnes and Steve Osguthorpe with 63, an excellent score and a score that puts them only 1 shot behind joint leaders Hugh Crawshaw and Malcolm Richardson and Andrew Wright and Ged Gamble and 0.5 shots behind John Richards and Shaun Gregory. All to play for in March’s final event.

Coaching news

Junior coaching

Junior coaching has always been a part of the summer months here at Wortley and over the years we have tried many different approaches to help and encourage our juniors. I remember when I first came to Wortley back in 2003, we had 20 juniors attending the sessions down on the course before we had the practice area by the 4th green, back then we had Lady Rowena’s 2 children, Somerset and Fleur amongst a host of our own juniors all now grown up and golfing elsewhere as their lives take them away to university and jobs in other towns and cities. Since then, we have had the natural ebb and flow in numbers, some years lots and some years we have hardly had any juniors but we have always provided the sessions regardless. Last year Will had a nice class of 5 to 10 juniors and this year looks like we will be in good junior health again with 12 to 15 juniors keen to get started. We don’t have the best facilities at Wortley to encourage juniors but we try and make the most of what we have. This year we are introducing the Golf Foundation junior passport, this is a multi-layered programme that progresses a complete novice golfer into a junior ready for membership at a golf club we hope this will be popular and continue our commitment to this area of the club.

Ladies taster sessions

This season we are going to provide several free taster sessions for Ladies with a view to hopefully increasing the number of lady golfers taking up golf. These will take the form of a ladies open week in which ladies who have never played golf can come to the club and have a go at golf all equipment provided free. Also they will be shown round the course and the club and hopefully sign up to some coaching blocks from where we can encourage them to start playing golf. If you have any friends or family who might fancy having a free golf experience get them to contact either myself on 07855392634 or to call the shop and register interest in having a go. The first week of sessions will be April 23rd to 27th. With another later in the Summer.

Similar sessions are also planned for Seniors and new male golfers, get your none golfing friends to register interest and come and see what they are missing out on.
