Who's been winning what? A bust week at Wortley with several knockout competitions coming to a climax and the usual stablefords, pars etc. so here’s a quick round up… Starting with the knockouts Mike Toon beat Richard Hodgson to win the Members Cup. Mike was ‘on fire’ as he played some of his best golf of the season when it mattered most to beat Richard who has been playing well all season 5&4. Caroline Taylor and Viv Sykes won out against Janet Moorhouse and Lady Captain Val Bellamy in the Ladies Foursomes salver final and Carol Kelly won the Wortley Bowl after defeating Caroline Taylor in the final. Paul Hutton and Howard Burton the current undefeated champions of the galaxy won the Jubilee Cup in a very close and lengthy battle with Hugh Crawshaw and Malcolm Richardson. The match was decided on the 22nd hole ( 4th Extra ). The match was played in great spirits with all four saying what a fantastic match they had been part of. That’s what sport is all about…a great battle and then to the bar ready to fight again. Great spirits guys. Brian Baker won in the Captain’s Cup in another very close match, a 36 hole final that came down to the 36th hole with Brian beating Paul Hanson by the smallest of margins. Another match played in great spirits and sportsmanship by both. Alan Hampshire was a very popular winner of the Carlton Cup a Major board competition with 37 points beating a host of players on 36 points. Well done Alan a fabulous win. My Pro’s comp on Saturday was won by Mick Gosney with a splendid 42 points winning a voucher for £45 points. In second was Nathan Hennessy, who is off to college in America this week so best wishes go to Nathan. In third was Oz (Stephen Osguthorpe), fourth John Richmond and fifth Lee Bhandal. All get shop vouchers. Nearest the pin in two shots on the 13th was won by Peter Saint who won a dozen Callaway Supersoft balls. Hilary Coverley won the Ladies Harland Bogey Final with an excellent score of +1 beating Pat Smith on a countback. Congratulations Hilary.
Alison Stenson won the September Par on Tuesday with a score of Level again winning on a countback over Jeannie Richardson.
Phew! Think that rounds up the busy comps week or two we have had. Just the Gold Medal to go this week and then we can look towards the Winter fixtures, Good Companions, Winter Stablefords and the Winter League will all start in October so lots of exciting ‘if a little colder’ golf to look forward to. |
