Peter Neale 1933-2020

We were sad to hear of the passing of Peter Neale this week. Peter was captain at WGC in 1999 and was a popular member for 42 years joining the club in 1978.

He would always come in to see us and ask if we had found him a driver that would give him an extra 20 yards, we did keep looking!

Peter loved to write poetry and he recently wrote this poignant piece.

RIP Peter, you will be missed at WGC.

Don't take it too seriously.

Just a little something came into my head..the other night.

Sometimes I think my body's done
My bits are wearing fast
The medics keep on patching up
But how long will they last?

Life's been so very kind to me
Problems have been few
But now the time has come you see
To have a full review

The spares are almost obsolete
For oldies such as me
So I'll keep pressing on each day
And what will be, will be

I don't suppose I'm doing bad
For someone of my years
If I start playing golf again
I'll finish up in tears

So the old clubs tired, and resting
They'll find somebody new
They might start hitting long again
Just like they used to do

My magic putter 'Raymond'
Seems, he's been with us forever
He's now part of the family
Over years, he's been so clever

He's done some magic putting
And done as he's been told
I've had him seventy years or more
He's been as good as gold

So there we are the history past
A new phase I'll begin
If it's great, just like my last one
Then I'll finish with a 'grin'

NHS Prize Draw

I would like to thank everyone who entered the draw to support the NHS , we received £1155, a fantastic effort by you all. 50% of the money will go into your prize draw and £567.50 will be sent off to the NHS fund. We are hoping to raise £100'000 as a collective group so I will keep you posted on that as the figures come in but you guys have certainly played a large part in achieving that.

Golf's rivalries pt2

Golf's greatest rivalries - Woods vs Mickelson

For those that go on stats, this barely constitutes a rivalry. However, when you consider they achieved their feats over the same period, then what both men have managed is mightily impressive.

Tiger was the face of the game for almost two decades. He’s won 15 majors, racked up 109 worldwide professional victories, and even had the main golf video game named after him for several years. In that same time, Phil played second fiddle. A role that saw ‘lefty’ accumulate five major titles, 51 worldwide professional wins and represent the USA in 12 consecutive Ryder Cups. Sadly for Mickelson, he never reached the summit of the World Golf Rankings, albeit spending 26 consecutive years inside the Top 50.

It’s scary to think what more either man could have achieved without the other standing in their way. Let us know which rivalry stands out for you the most and why by getting in touch here.

Weekly challenge

We want to get as many Wortley Golf Club golfers attempting this week’s challenge as possible! It’s a pretty straightforward one so give it a go and let us know how you get on. Who will be the champion?

What to do

Grab your wedge and a golf ball. Head to the garden or give yourself some space inside the house. Now, try to do as many keepy-ups as possible without the ball touching the ground.

Sounds easy, right?

Get adventurous

If you’re a bit of a show-off, try hitting the ball off your thigh or stopping the ball on your clubface before starting again. You can do this with tennis balls too, or even toilet rolls (apparently).

Golf at home

If any of you are missing golf as much as we are, you’ll be straight onto the course as soon as it’s safe to do so. Well, until that time comes, here’s a little drill for you to try that’ll keep those competitive juices flowing.

The set-up

We’ve used a mug as our makeshift hole, but feel free to use whatever you have lying about the house!

Set your balls down in a straight line from the hole, at one-foot intervals from each other. Starting with the closest, hole each putt without missing. If you miss, go back to the start and try again!

Too easy?

The simplest way to make this drill harder is to increase the distance between each of the balls in your line.

If you’re simply too good and are putting like Tiger, you could try finding a sloping putt or make the target (your makeshift hole) smaller.
